I believe
that as a breeder I have a responsibility to ensuring that when I place
a puppy into their forever home that this puppy have the best start I can
give them. So I do screen all new families, I want to get to know you and
I want you to get to know me. I plan my breeding's carefully and breed
fully tested dogs. Once the pups have reached eight weeks of age I then
take them to my vet for a health screen. My vet does a thorough examination,
he listens to their heart and lungs. He then checks their eyes and patellas,
he also notes if they have any type of hernia's. Once he has completed
this exam I then have him do a letter about the litter on his letter head,
this letter includes the findings of each puppy. The letter also includes
the sire and dam's names, the birth date of the pups, how many, sex and
gender. If a puppy has a problem this is also noted in the letter and each
new family gets a copy of this letter, this is the litters first health
record. When the pups are ten weeks old I then take them to see a board
certified eye specialist, I repeat the same service that my vet has performed
and all puppies are on one certification, a copy of this also goes to the
new family. Although I cannot predict that a pup may come down with a genetic
disorder I strive to ensure that they wont develop a problem early on in
life by breeding clear dogs for heart, eyes and patellas, although I must
be firm here it doesn't mean it couldn't happen it just means that my odds
are better that they wont because of the health precautions I take with
all of my dogs. I keep the original health cert on the litter as well as
their original eye cert and place this in their parent's health folders,
this allows me to keep track of what my dogs are producing, I have never
not answered an email or phone call from a new family or old. I don't believe
there are any dumb questions or concerns and do my best to help my families
understand a problem and help fix it if i am able. If there is something
I don't know I call out to other breeders and seek an answer, knowledge
is power for everyone and I believe in sharing my knowledge with anyone,
this allows me to sleep at night. Once I have all these health certs completed
on the litter the pups are ready for their new families, most of the time
they are all spoken for prior to these health checks. I do not allow any
pup to leave before these health checks, however I do keep all the families
up dated with photos. When a pup leaves for their new home they leave with
a portfolio of their mom and dads photos, mom and dad current health records,
pictures of siblings and last but not least their own registration papers
and health records including an immunization record with wormings. I hope
that the steps I take will help give my puppies a long and healthy life
